Fly Girlz Release Covered by Washington Post Express

The Washington Post Express showed up to last week's Fly Girlz CD release party with a camera and asked a bunch of people what they would do if they could fly. The result of that was just posted in its "Out There" photo gallery.

The question was a nod to the Fly Girlz track "Born 2 B Fly".

Fly Girlz in The Hundred In The Hands Zine

The Hundred in the Hands online zine just posted a great article on the new Fly Girlz record:

[Nathan] Corbin’s production stays free of pre-conceived ideas of what modern rap music is and also avoids the trappings of what could have been nothing more than old-school revivalism. Instead he approaches it on his own, indie/noise, terms and this, sometimes abrasive, production leads to something utterly unique. [In a] WNYC interview, the girls admit that at first they didn’t know what to think of some of the sounds their collaborator made for them. It’s certainly hard to imagine them or any of their peers quite knowing what to do at a Z’s or Excepter show. Likewise, it’s hard to imagine most of Z’s and Excepter’s peers knowing quite how to move beyond their familiar and comfortable loft party affectations. Representing NYC is a mutual push into unexpected territories. It’s a gentle shoving in hopes of engendering even more ambitious experiments somewhere down the road from Brownsville.

April Tape Loop Installation In Rock Creek Park

Earlier in April, Layne Garrett gave some DC sound artists 30 second tapes to record over- 1 tape per person. The final product would be an installation of these tape loops in the woods of Rock Creek Park. Here is some video from that day:

There are a lot more short snippets of video here.

Peoples Potential Unlimted

One of my favorite record labels is Peoples Potential Unlimited, a small boutique imprint releasing obscure funk and private press 7" and 12" records. Best part about PPU is that they are located right here in Washington, DC.

I just put in an order since I couldn't deny myself Minority Band's "Tasty Tune" and Midnight Express' "Danger Zone". Fortunately, you can stream sample mp3s for most of the catalogue to help you decide among the abundance of quality releases. PPU's impeccable selection pairs some of the most under-appreciated music that still promises to tear up dancefloors. And if that weren't enough, the same folks running PPU also hold down Earcave, which scours vinyl hideouts for unlikely treasures and the rarest of synth-funk goodness.

New ZS Remix 12" Just In!

Sockets Records is pleased to announce the newest release featuring two of New York's most provocative artists. This 12" record features Excepter's Nathan Corbin remixing two tracks from New York's ZS back catalogue. "Bump" and "Except When You Don’t Because Sometimes You Won’t" get the raw dance trance minimal-beat treatment. Variously categorized as no-wave, brutal-prog, and post-minimalist, ZS is primarily concerned with making music that challenges the physical and mental limitations of both performer and listener. Nathan Corbin most recently provided all of the beats for The Fly Girlz Da'Brats from Da'Ville CD. The 12" is $12 including postage and available here or under the records section of the Sockets Records website.

In Fields - New Field Recordings Net Label/Blog

Field recordings can be both an intense and inspiring sound experience. The art of field recording seems to be reserved for a collection of enthusiasts who devote a good amount of passion and time to it. But appreciation does not have to end at the enthusiasts. After releasing a cdr for Chris Lynn, entitled Audible Landscapes, I became more engaged with the idea of a website devoted to highlighting recordings specifically made outside of the studio - and in the field.

In Fields is a new net label devoted to recordings of this nature launched by Chris Lynn and Sockets in early 2009. It's a very simple idea: highlight interesting recordings and spark the interest of those new to this type of audio. We're looking for pieces that are ideally less than 10 minutes. At this point a couple things are up, but if you are a budding field recorder, please get in touch to submit your audio (email address is at the bottom of the web page).

For those interested, Chris Lynn's Audible Landscapes is available for $7 postage paid via Paypal. Featuring both field recordings and sound experiments from his experimental films, this is a fine document of one of the DC area's most talented sound artists.

Washington Post Features Fly Girlz CD Release Party

The Washington Post's Going out Gurus just posted a nice write-up of Thursday's Fly Girlz Release Party:
Fly Girlz (listen) is a hip-hop group whose members are all 12-to-14-year-old girls. So, yes, there's some inherent gimmickry, as there is bound to be whenever you have adolescents performing just about anything. But man, the group's CD, which is being released by local experimental label Sockets, is pretty fresh. That's probably how the girls -- Tamera, Tyshana, Vernice, Sharmaine, Ameena and Ashli, all students at PS 284 in Brooklyn -- would describe it, at least. For kids who weren't alive during hip-hop's golden era, they sure are influenced by it. The beats are mostly simple, sometimes spacey, no doubt thanks to the production work of Nathan Corbin from Brooklyn improv-noise collective Excepter. Things just keep getting weirder, right? But it's the girls' rhymes that keep things grounded. They rap about the topics you'd expect -- boys, Brooklyn, low-rise pants -- and if the circumstances surrounding the recording make you skeptical, at least the girls are sincere with their rhymes. They probably don't think that it's "hip" and "neat" that their record producer's part of the Representing NYC project, which pairs native Brooklyn kids up with new-to-Brooklyn artists. They probably just think it's cool that they're in middle school and have a pretty awesome hip-hop album being released. The CD release party is tonight at Red.
Awesome! We're excited.

Chris Grier

Chris Grier exudes musicianship. His unique approach to composition references the familiar while at the same time blasts a shotgun-sized hole in what you know about the guitar. No stranger to Sockets Records, Chris was featured on the first two Sockets Audio Zines.

This is all foreshadowing to announce that Chris will be releasing an LP on Sockets Records in the near future and we can't wait to unleash it on all of you!
